In 2006, Basketball as a Mission traveled to Cuernavaca, Morelos, México, where coaches united through UNIC (la Universidad de Cuanahuác) to help children at an orphanage called Casa Hogar. The children who live at Casa Hogar have few possessions, and many share rooms with several others. A five day camp was held at the orphanage over a two week period, where coaches spent the afternoons teaching the children what was a completely new sport. BaaM built a basketball hoop for Casa Hogar and games were played on a half court surface. The rim still stands today. Although the children tried to switch the camp into a soccer camp, they all worked extremely hard to master basic basketballs skills. We only chose one camper of the year back then, and it was a young lady (Maria Fernanda) whose effort and willingness to help others was unmatched.
